The Story

Your brain buffers. Your mouth says kuan. The conversation carries on without you.

Kuan is a noun. Kuan is also a verb. Kuan is your cousin's boyfriend, the tool your father is holding his hand out for, and that place with the good lechon near the kuan. Ang kuan. Kuan-a. Gi-kuan nako. It conjugates. That is the part outsiders refuse to believe until they hear it.

Every language has a word for the thing you forgot. Whatchamacallit. Thingamajig. Doohickey. They all sound like surrender. Kuan does not, because kuan is not asking for help. It is a small act of faith that the person across from you is already three steps ahead and will fill the blank without breaking stride. They almost always do.

Ilonggos say it too. So do Tagalogs, more quietly. A word that useful does not stay in one province.

That is the joke and also the whole point. You can run an entire conversation in Bisaya where half the nouns are kuan and nobody is confused, nobody asks, nobody slows down. Try that in English.
