The Story

There are things you cannot finish alone.

Salig is the Cebuano word for what you do about that. To trust. To lean on. To hand over the part you cannot carry and believe it will hold.

It is not the same as hoping. Hoping costs nothing. Salig begins after you have done every piece of the work that was yours to do, and the rest belongs to the weather, or to a person who promised, or to God.

It is the farmer watching the sky in June with the seed already in the ground. The mother wiring fare money to Manila on the word of a cousin she has not seen in nine years. The fisherman pushing out at three in the morning because the sea has always given, even when it has also taken. The parent who signs the tuition without knowing yet where the second payment comes from.

Salig ko nimo. I trust you. Four syllables a Cebuano does not spend lightly, because saying them out loud means admitting you cannot do it by yourself.
