The Story

Ani is harvest in Tagalog. It is also harvest in Bisaya. In Nueva Ecija it is the only season that counts.

Nueva Ecija grows more rice than any other province in the Philippines. Flat land running to the horizon, hemmed by the Sierra Madre on one side and the Caraballo range on the other, no coastline anywhere. Twice a year the whole province changes color together. Green in the growing, gold in the ripening, then stubble and smoke, then green again.

None of it happens without water. Pantabangan holds it in the hills and lets it down through canals into Central Luzon, and when a drought runs long enough the reservoir drops far enough to show the town that was flooded to build it. A church tower comes back up out of the water. People drive out to look, then go home and check the fields.

This is not scenery. It is infrastructure with a smell and a season.

The Nueva Ecija Ani Tee is for the ones who left and can still tell you what a field smells like after the burning. For the family whose tuition came out of two harvests a year. For anyone who has eaten in this country and never once thought about where it started.
