The Story

Tillar is the loom, not the cloth.

Ilocano for the wooden handloom, sometimes written tilar. Abel is the cloth. Inabel is what you call it once it comes off an Ilocano loom. Everybody knows the blanket. Almost nobody knows the machine that made it.

Bangar, La Union has been weaving since the early 1800s. The town is where the inabel blanket comes from. The colour used to come out of tree bark and boiled fruit, in stone dyeing vats called timbugan. The ruins of them still stand in Barangay Consuegra.

The Amburayan runs north of the town, the same river Lam-ang swims in the oldest Ilocano epic there is. Bangar throws its festival for weaving and blacksmithing. Not a beach. A loom and an anvil.

The Tillar Tee draws the loom working. Warp threads coming down, the shuttle crossing on the pick, the finished cloth rolling off in bands below it. One orange point where thread turns into fabric. On the chest, the mark and the coordinates, 16.8936° N and 120.4218° E.

For every weaver in Bangar still sitting at one of these. For anyone who has slept under an inabel blanket and never once asked where it came from.
