The Story

Most people climb Mt. Pulag for the clouds.

They take the Ambangeg trail out of Benguet, sleep a few cold hours at the Babadak ranger station, and start walking at two in the morning. The last stretch is dwarf bamboo, waist high, in the dark. Then the sky goes grey, then orange, and the whole Cordillera is under a floor of cloud. It is worth every hour it costs.

It is also not our mountain. The Ibaloi hold Pulag as the resting ground of the souls of their dead. That is not a legend and it is not the past. It is a belief people carry now, on ground that visitors keep forgetting is somebody's.

Three provinces meet at the peak. Benguet, Ifugao and Nueva Vizcaya, their borders converging on one point 2,926 metres up, the highest ground in Luzon and the third highest in the country.

The Pulag Tee maps the walk. Contour rings, the Ambangeg approach as a dashed line, the summit marked in orange, and the elevation profile of the climb running above it.
