The Story

Two thousand years ago, before any machine existed that could do what they needed done, the Ifugao people of the Cordillera looked at their mountains and began to carve.

By hand. Generation by generation. Father to son to grandson to great-granddaughter. Terraces cut into the slopes of the Ifugao highlands with such precision that they follow the natural contours of the mountains like the earth itself was collaborating. Stone walls built without mortar that have held for two millennia. An irrigation system fed by the forests above that still works today exactly as it was designed to work.

If you laid all the terraces end to end they would circle half the globe.

The Banaue Rice Terraces are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, called by some the eighth wonder of the world, but that description still somehow undersells them. Because they are not just impressive. They are intimate. They are the accumulated labor and love of a people who decided that this mountain was worth tending and that the work was worth doing even knowing that the full harvest of that work would be reaped by children not yet born.
