Forty minutes in from Cabatuan with rice fields on both sides the whole way. La Paz batchoy at a counter where the broth has been going longer than you have been alive. A city you can walk across. Someone giving you directions in a Hiligaynon so soft it sounds like an apology.

Iloilo International sits 24 kilometres outside the city, which reads like an inconvenience until you make the drive. Nobody hurries you through that airport. Nobody hurries you anywhere in Iloilo. It is the calmest arrival in the country, and the city at the end of it has nothing to prove to anybody.
