The Story

Every Filipino knows the way home, even from the other side of the world.

Balay is the word for house in Cebu, and in Iloilo, Tacloban and Laoag too. Manila says bahay. Batanes says vahay. Everywhere, it means more than walls. It means the kitchen where someone always saved you a plate. The wooden steps that creaked under your lolo's feet. The sound of rain on a roof you could name in the dark.

The house on this shirt is the oldest kind we have. Bamboo walls, a nipa roof, posts lifting it above the flood, a ladder that asks only that you climb. When a family had to move, the whole village carried it on their shoulders. That is bayanihan in its oldest picture: one balay, many hands.

The Balay Tee is for everyone building one. The OFW sending the next payment on a lot back in the province. The couple unlocking their first apartment in the city. The one who left Cebu at nineteen and still calls it balay at forty. The one whose home is a voice on a video call at six in the morning, Hong Kong time.

The sun sits low on the horizon, right where it always is when you are almost there.

One word. Infinite return.

Designed in Cebu. For those who always come home.

Load video: 7641 Islands film: Where is home?

Where is home for you?

For some it’s an island. For some it’s a person. We call it balay.

Every island says it differently. Every island means the same thing.

In Cebu it’s balay. In Iloilo, Tacloban and Laoag, balay too. Cross to Manila and it softens to bahay. Pampanga wears it down to bale. Up in Batanes it becomes vahay.

The sound changes from island to island. The meaning never has. It’s the kitchen light left on. The plate someone saves. The door you don’t knock on.

Every December the ports fill with people saying another word: uli. Going home. This shirt is for the year in between.
