The Story

Before it was Baguio, it was bagiw.

The Ibaloi word for moss. Under American rule the name was written down as Baguio, and the spelling stuck to the whole mountain city. Before that it was Kafagway, a wide grassy clearing where Burnham Park sits today, a settlement small enough that every account of it disagrees on the number of houses.

Moss does not grow in a hurry. It needs cold, damp, shade, and time. It grows on the north side of the pine trunks and across the mossy forest that rings the city, and it has been doing that quietly for longer than anyone has been counting. A city of two hundred thousand people carries the name of the slowest thing living in it.

Anyone who has driven up Kennon or Marcos Highway knows the exact moment it starts. The temperature drops. The windows fog. The pines come up out of the white and the lowlands are gone behind you.

The Bagiw Tee is that moment. A stand of Benguet pine drawn in contour lines, with a single orange line marking where the fog stops and the trees begin.
