The Story

Davao is further south than most people ever go.

The approach over the gulf. Mount Apo out there under the clouds, which is where it usually is. Durian stacked past arrivals that you already know you cannot take on the plane. Heat that sits differently than Manila heat, heavier and cleaner at the same time.

Francisco Bangoy International is the front door to Mindanao, and Mindanao for much of the country is still a place people have opinions about rather than memories of. Then you land. The roads are wide, the city is calm, and the island keeps going for hours in every direction. Most people spend the drive in from the airport quietly revising what they thought they knew.
