And it is not because life in Bacolod has always been easy. The MassKara Festival was born in 1980, the year the sugar industry collapsed and a ferry sank and the city had every reason to grieve. Instead, Bacolod put on masks and danced. Not to pretend nothing was wrong but to choose joy anyway. To insist on it.

That is the Bacolod spirit. Joy not as naivety but as defiance. Celebration not as escape but as resilience.
